Create a warm and welcoming country kitchen with one of these designs.

1 Part of a large open plan space, this airy room is the ultimate family kitchen. The bespoke cabinets are painted in Farrow & Ball’s Pigeon Grey with honed granite worktops and the island and glazed dressers are all made from English character oak.

The island is fitted with wide drawers, a preparation sink, electric sockets and an additional oven making it a functional work table and nearby, in close proximity to the sink, is a circular butcher’s block. Kitchens by Podesta begin at £30,000.

Classic painted kitchen with Aga, painted cabinets and central kitchen table

2 With an Aga in the chimney recess, painted panelled cabinets and a central kitchen table, simplicity is the dominant theme in the kitchen of this Regency house. The cupboards are painted a shade of green popular in the early 19th century and china handles endow them with a fresh country look. Classic Painted kitchens by Hallwood Furniture cost from £15,000.

Country kitchen in a double height room; Painted kitchen cabinets with chrome handles

3 The owners of this kitchen wanted nothing to detract from the soaring roof structure so, instead of lining the room with eye level wall cabinets, storage was concentrated in a wide larder unit. Lighting is a particular problem in double height rooms so a fitting composed of multiple downlights was suspended over the island work area. The Renaissance kitchen by Cotteswood starts from £20,000.

4 Not all country kitchens are rustic and this one is designed in a style appropriate to its elegant surroundings. The Chichester cabinets are painted in Old Chalk with chrome handles adding lively highlights. A curved base unit gives the kitchen a handmade look. Kit Stone kitchens start from £12,000.

L-shaped kitchen with painted cabinets; Oak finish kitchen with natural stone surfaces

5 Sophisticated materials deliver country style with a more contemporary look in this L-shaped kitchen by Rencraft. Painted cabinets with traditional beehive handles form the structure but a stainless steel range cooker, walnut wood island and granite worktops give a sleek finish. From £14,000.

6 Oak has an affinity with stone so for this kitchen, with stripped back walls, the owner chose Neptune’s Henley kitchen. Made from oak with a lighter finish, the cabinets complement the natural stone surfaces. White marble surfaces reflect light but plaid furnishings add a note of warmth. Henley kitchens by Neptune begin around £12,000.

Shaker style kitchen with painted cabinets; Handmade painted cabinets in a country kitchen

7 This kitchen gives country style a fresh twist. Cabinets painted in two shades of grey stand alongside wall cupboards in natural oak; the Shaker style panelled doors have slim bar handles. A timber island worktop, a Belfast sink and an Aga underwrite the country credentials. The English Revival kitchen by Mereway Kitchens starts from £22,500.

8 Handmade cabinets in solid oak and Farrow & Ball’s Green Blue paint line two walls in this large kitchen, providing generous amounts of storage. A chandelier helps to visually lower the tall ceiling and a peaked chimney recess and barley twist dining chairs hint at the Gothic style of the Victorian house. Handmade bespoke kitchens by Wilson Fink start from £15,000.

Country kitchen with a freestanding work table

9 Original features enhance any period home and in this Victorian rectory old flagstones and antique furniture set an authentic scene. Martin Moore has designed a kitchen that is sensitive to this setting, building a free-standing work table instead of a fixed island. The table is designed in the style of a pot board with a slatted shelf below on which to store vessels and baskets. Kitchens by Martin Moore begin at £30,000.

Kitchen with painted cabinets and solid and glass panelled wall cupboards; White painted kitchen

10 This kitchen from the Langham range by Second Nature comes in 14 colours with a choice of door, drawer and handle options so you can design a kitchen with an individual look. This one combines Alabaster and Sage painted cabinets with solid and glass panelled wall cupboards. Details like the dark metal knobs and cornicing give it that desirable country look. Prices start from £11,000.

11 White is an unusual colour choice for a country kitchen but it creates a wonderfully light and airy atmosphere and, partnered with wooden worktops and a slate floor, is perfectly practical. Style details like the beaded door and drawer fronts, hooded drawer pulls and small paned glazed display cupboards contribute to the period feel. The Original Kitchen by Harvey Jones can be painted in any colour and prices begin at £17,000.

Kitchen with additional storage in the central island

12 In rooms with a low, beamed ceiling it’s important to maximise light so wall cabinets have been kept to the minimum here with extra storage built in to the central island. A wall mounted plate rack holds crockery in daily use, pale paint colours have been used throughout and the window left uncurtained to admit daylight. Kitchens by Barnes of Ashburton start from £20,000.
