Back in May, we invited you to send us photos of your own period homes and tell us the stories behind them. It was difficult to pick five winners, but here they are…

Meet the winners of the 2017 Readers’ Home Awards

Paul and Laura Clark Period Living Readers' Homes Awards winners with their family in their home

Overall winner and top of the Best First-Time Project category is Paul and Laura Clark’s Victorian home. The couple wowed the judges with their contemporary mix of colours, patterns and textiles and scooped the cash prize and £200 in vouchers to spend at Vanessa Arbuthnott.

Crittall windows, rooflights and opening up the space have created a kitchen-diner perfect for a growing family. Reclaimed parquet flooring helps to zone the eating area from the quarry tiled cooking area

Category winners

The winner in the Best Country Home category is Barbara Matthews’ farmhouse, thankfully now secured against the elements and with a homely look that embraces English country-house style and mementoes from her native New England.

Barbara’s farmhouse has a traditional sitting room, complete with original cast-iron range and carved stone surround

Mary Gwynn’s restored and extended grade-II listed home wins our Best Renovation. Mary has beautifully balanced the original 15th-century building with new additions – a practical kitchen and a modern glass link to a ground-floor bedroom.

Mary’s kitchen is also her workspace — she writes her recipe books at the oak table and bench made by Sibyl Van Praag at Factorum

Winning the Best Family Home is this pretty Victorian villa, which Gemma Wightman updated and refreshed, turning it into the perfect home for her family and for her ceramics business, which she runs from a converted garden studio.

The kitchen-diner extension was one of the home’s main selling points and Gemma has made the space her own with a new travertine floor, and a pine table teamed with dining chairs found on Freecycle

The prizewinning Best Kitchen belongs to Deborah and Mal Eustice, who added an unusual triple-gabled extension at the back of their home, with full-height glazing giving views of the garden from the new kitchen-diner.

Deborah had the Shaker-style island unit and cabinets painted in Farrow & Ball colours for a traditional look that works well with the modern chairs from Ikea

The four runners-up each win £150 in vouchers to spend at Vanessa Arbuthnott.
