Celebrate Charles Dickens' Bicentenary
2012 marks the 200 year anniversary of the birth of world-famous British author Charles Dickens. Celebrate Dickens' Bicentenary year with one of these great days out.
Visit Restoration House
This intriguing property (right) was the inspiration for Satis House, the home of Miss Havisham in the novel Great Expectations and featured in David Lean’s 1946 film version of the story. It is so called because it also played host to Charles II on his journey to London after his exile and is well worth a visit for fans of Dickens, Charles II and walled gardens.
Restoration House, 17-19 Crow Lane, Rochester, Kent ME1 1RF (01634 848520; restorationhouse.co.uk). Reopens May 2012. Visit the website for the latest information.
Visit the Dickens and London Exhibition
This is the UK’s first major exhibition on the author for over 40 years. Paintings, photographs, costumes and objects will illustrate themes that Dickens wove into his works, such as poverty and childhood. Highlights include rarely seen manuscripts including Bleak House and David Copperfield, and a specially commissioned film by one of the UK’s leading documentary film-makers, William Raban, exploring the similarities between London after dark today and the city described by Dickens over 150 years ago.
Dickens and London, Museum of London, 150 London Wall, London EC2Y 5HN (020 7001 9844; museumoflondon.org.uk). Open until 10 June 2012. See website for times and ticket information.
