Celebrating the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens
To mark the 200th birthday of Charles Dickens a host of celebrations have been planned by the Charles Dickens Museum and Film London. Dickens related celebrations will take place across the world under the Dickens 2012 banner.
Dickens 2012 plans to focus on the cultural and educational significance of the life and work of Charles Dickens to mark the bicentenary of his birth.
The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall will be visiting the Charles Dickens Museum and will attend Wreathlaying Ceremony at Westminster Abbey on 7 February.
British Council's 24 hour Global Read-a-thon will take place in 24 countries starting in Australia with a reading from 'Dombey and Son'. "Reading aloud - bringing characters to life- was a crucial part of Dickens's life" said Susie Nicklin, Director of Literature at the British Council. "As one of more than 100 British Council events taking place across 50 countries commemoration Dickens's wide-ranging reach and influence we look forward to sharing his work with our audiences worldwide."
Dickens in London will be transmitted on Radio 4 and online throughout the week of Dickens's birthday.
