Door openings in old houses may not be a standard size so be ready to opt for custom made designs.
Panelled doors made from softwood and solid or veneered hardwoods are the most popular for period properties. Upper panels can be glazed to allow light into small rooms.
Ledged and braced doors, made up of planks of wood held together by horizontal ledges and diagonal braces, look good in cottages, country-style homes and barns.
Choose door furniture that’s sympathetic to the door style.
Most manufacturers make fire doors to complement their ranges – they are needed for homes higher than two storeys and for loft conversions.
