What to consider

  • Choose a material sympathetic to the age of your property: timber, steel and architectural bronze frames suit period properties best.
  • Glazing options range from single to triple-glazed units, and you can opt for decorative, self-cleaning, energy saving and toughened safety glass, too.
  • Thermally efficient versions of traditional sash and casement windows cut down domestic energy costs.
  • Hardwood oak frames are popular for traditional homes and are usually stained. Hardwood has a longer lifespan than softwood but is about four times more expensive.
  • Bespoke feature windows create an impressive facade.
  • Reclaimed stained glass windows are often to be found at salvage yards. Browse Salvo (salvo.co.uk).
