The best of British: Roger Oates
As part of the Sourced Locally series, Period Living talks to Roger Oates, whose comapny produces woven textiles, rugs and carpets.
Having trained as woven textile designers, Roger and Fay Oates opened their own studio as soon as they left college. The business has been producing Venetian flatweave rugs, runners and carpets from their Hereford studio for more than 20 years.
Trading from their smart showroom in Chelsea, London, Roger Oates is a distinct design boutique. ‘The craft is only the process,’ he says. ‘I am much more interested in the finished product.’
Mainly known for its stripes and fresh colours, achieved by using extremely white fibre, Roger Oates has recently made a range with very natural wools. ‘We have used a yarn made from real Shetland wool, and the colours are really rather beautiful,’ says Roger. The appealingly unprocessed wool moves from dark browns and blacks through to mottled soft and dark greys, creating an elegant line of carpets and rugs.
Roger Oates is now launching the Wilton range of 100% wool runners with traditional geometric patterns and trefoil designs as a departure from the company’s signature striped flatweaves.
Roger Oates Design is based at The Long Barn, Eastnor, Herefordshire (01531 632718) and trades from 1 Munro Terrace, London (020 7351 2288). For details of stockists go to rogeroates.com.
