Skirting board repair
I'm nearly at the end of a long renovation project but I have one problem that I just can't seem to fix. The skirting boards in the hallway and kitchen are quite ornately moulded and varnished but they have a lot of deep chips and cracks in them. Does anyone know of a good way of repairing these without having to rip them off and buy new ones?
I've had some synthetic wood filler type products recommended to me but after some testing none of them really seem to the job.
Any ideas?

I'd be interested to hear
I'd be interested to hear people's views on this as I've had similar problems in the past and never been able to find a satisfactory wood filler.
What products have people recommended?
Wood putty
I've had quite a variety of different wood putties recommended to me, but they never seem to have the right finish.
