Skirting boards wrong level

We recently took up the carpet in our living room and sanded down and varnished the floorboards we found underneath. It looks lovely, just what we'd hoped for. However, now the carpet, underlay, and patches of plastic tiles that were also there have been removed, the skirting boards don't meet the level of the boards. What can we do? I'd be grateful for any advice.
