Sanding wooden floor

Could you give me any advice regarding Parka Flooring, I have moved into a property where the colour stain used on the flooring is too dark for the room - could I use a hired electric sander and what grade sandpaper disc should I use? Also what treatment should I use after to protect the flooring and enhance its colour. Regards Hilary
