How do I remove Artex Ceilings?

The former owners of my 1950s house must have loved the textured patterns that can be created with Artex as they're on the ceiling of almost every room (except the bathroom - which has polystyrene tiles instead!). Can anyone recommend a cheap, effective way to produce a smooth ceiling? Or is my only option to find a good plasterer?
