Coloured Ceiling?

We're currently doing up our house, don't know how old the house is - possibly up to 200 years old. We're currently redecorating the living room, which has a lovely cornice. We've reinstated a picture rail and also a ceilling rose. We're putting up wallpaper up to the picture rail, but debating whether to paint the ceiling in a similar colour to the walls or leave it white. (It was previously nicotine brown, as the previous owner was a heavy smoker!). The white ceiling is a lovely change and makes it nice and light, but wondering if it was more in keeping and would set off the coving if painted a golden cream.
