Hi, I'm Alan Denyer, owner of AWD Design & Restoration - welcome to my hints and tips blog! We develop and restore 'older' property in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.
We're giving a 1950's brick built garage a little makeover to blend it in with the Victorian house it sits next to - and are replacing the metal framed existing window with a 'cottage style' reclaim.
The style of the windows is very different - and this obviously contributes to the finished effect - however it's the change in proportion (from 'landscape' to 'portrait') where things get interesting.
Alison Moses and her partner are currently renovating an 18th century Lock Cottage in Sandon, Staffordshire.
Currently the property has been stripped out, back to the orginal brick and they are waiting for planning permission before starting the extension. They intend on putting as much of the original features back into the property as possible and have already taken the ceiling down to reveal the old purlings.
Alison and her partner will be completing most of the renovation work themselves and expect this to take a year to 18 months before completion.
Phil and Philippa Heath spent several years travelling around the world before finally moving to the Derbyshire countryside, on the edges of the Peak District, in the early 1990s. The property they found was a three-bedroom cottage, which would have been two homes when it was built around 200 years ago. Understandably, a huge amount of work was needed, but it would take the Heaths the following two decades to begin even to scratch the surface. Read about their project here.
