How should I finish my Victorian bathroom

I want to tile the bathroom of my Victorian house to dado height but don’t know how best to finish off the upper edge. I’d like something more decorative than moulded dado tiles.

Maggie Stevenson replies: What about edging the tiled area with a border of embossed tiles in a matching colour? Tiles are usually installed with a view to the long term and you’re less likely to tire of discreetly patterned tiles. The Leaf and Thistle designs shown above are from the Period Embossed wall tiles range by H&E Smith (01782 281617; hesmith.co.uk), measure 152mm by 76mm and cost £3.17 each. Plain field tiles in 152mm square and 152mm by 76mm brickshaped formats are available in the same palette of tones, £1.12 and 74p each respectively, as are special glazed ceramic corner pieces to give the tiling a professional finish.
