How do I get candle wax out of my carpet?

How do you remove candle wax from carpet effectively?
Annabel Wilson, by email

Lucinda Notley replies: I have found that the best way to tackle spilt candle wax is to pick as much of the wax off the carpet as possible by hand and vacuum up the debris. If there is still wax embedded in the carpet the next step is to lay a paper bag or a paper towel on the stain and to run a warm iron over the paper. This should melt the wax and it will simply lift off the carpet and on to the paper. Do make sure the iron is on its lowest heat setting as synthetic carpet fibres can melt at high temperatures.
