I live in a Grade B listed Georgian flat and need to replace the exterior back door
I live in a Grade B listed Georgian flat in Edinburgh and need to replace the exterior back door; and the garden railins need serious attention too. What styles would be fitting and where can we source them?

Michael Holmes replies: If the original back door is still in place your first consideration should be to repair it and the same goes for the railings. If this isn't practical then you have two choices: replacing the existing door like-for-like in style, materials and colour (whether old or modern), which will not require listed building consent; and, depending on where you live, changing the style of the door. This may require conservation area consent and possibly also planning permissin. Employing a local joiner will be the most cost-effective way to get a bespoke copy of a period door and you could reuse the same door ironmongery.
