I have removed a brass canopy and frame from around my pine fire surround

I have removed a brass canopy and frame from around my pine fire surround, which has left white marks behind. I'm not sure what they are but I'd like to remove the stains.

Helaine Clare replies: I think the white marks on the pine fire surround are probably caused by metal cleaner that was used to polish the brass canopy. I would try a plastic scourer dipped in warm soapy water. You will need to experiment on small and less conspicuous areas first. If this fails try rubbing with steel wool and white spirit. It might also be worth giving methylated spirits a go too. Once the marks have been removed you may notice that the wood is looking dull. I would rub in some Black Bison coloured fine paste wax from Liberon (01797 36755) to help protect and enhance the wood.
