I am looking for a translucent varnish for my beams

Helaine Clare replies: I live in an old farmhouse and I've treated by beams with Liberon's Superior Danish Oil. This emphasises the grain and gives a soft satin sheen finish. If you prefer a more glossy effect then I'd recommend using clear Liquid Wax Black Bison, also available from Liberon (01797 367555). If you decide to oil your beams keep the can in a warm place overnight so that it can be more easily absorbed. Apply by brush or cloth and after 10 minutes wipe away any oil left on the surface. It will darken the wood so try the product on an inconspicuous area first.
