What are the alternatives to secondary glazing?

I am renovating a Grade II listed property. The conservation officer will not allow me to replace my six-pane windows because they are original ‘wavy’ glass. Is there any way to increase the insulation other than secondary glazing?
Ray Marlow, by email

Roger Hunt replies: Some secondary glazing systems, like the Slimline units offered by Storm Windows (01384 636365; stormwindows.co.uk) are reasonably discreet and can be removed in summer. Heavy, insulated curtains or blinds are effective, while draughtproofing windows makes a huge difference. Companies such as Copycats (01732 866632; copycatsweb.co.uk), Ventrolla (0800 027 7454; ventrolla.co.uk) and Sash Repairs (020 8965 4185; sashrepairs.co.uk) not only overhaul windows but also draughtproof them by installing inconspicuous ‘brush’ strips.

Can I fit double glazing in my Victorian home?

Double glazing leaded light windows

Our 1930's house has pitch pine leaded light windows. Is it possible to double glaze these without losing the period feature(s). Is secondary glazing, suggested as an option to another reader, effective in preventing condensation?
Thanks

Secondary glazing

I think if secondary glazing is installed correctly then you shouldn't have any problems with condensation. I found this article really useful: http://www.periodliving.co.uk/renovating/step-step-guides/installing-sec...
